The central location and prestigious neighborhood of the greatest monuments of the Main Town causes, that the island, located at Motława River, is characterized by extremely high touristic values. This in turn guarantees certain profits on investment, especially in the hotel sector. One of the most recent investments currently carried out on Wyspa Spichrzów (Granary Island) is Aparthotel Number One.
History of Wyspa Spichrzów (Granary Island) is dated back to fourteenth century, when at the Motława River have been built first granaries – formerly magazines of Main City. Island itself has been marked in 1576 after digging of New Motława channel. It is estimated, that in sixteenth century there were existing up to several hundred of granaries. Interestingly, they did not have numbers but names as preserved to this day: Steffen, Deo and Wisłoujście.
It was a very lively, economic and warehouse part of city centre, being industrial heart of Gdańsk, at that time one of the most important seaport in Europe – reminds architect Marcin Kozikowski from KD Kozikowski Design studio, which has created the project of Nowa Motława, including Aparthotel Number One.
Devastated during the Second World War, particularly severely in the northern part, Wyspa Spichrzów (Granary Island) long time could not await the period, when it thrives again. “This time luckily came, after adoption of new spatial development plan for Wyspa Spichrzów (Granary Island), creating investment opportunities and starting total change in development of this district of Gdańsk” – says Marcin Kozikowski.
Historic buildings of Island were the main inspiration for creators of Aparthotel Number One. Characteristic ridge roofs of five connected buildings, bright elevation and wooden windows are just some elements inspired by the history of Wyspa Spichrzów (Granary Island).
“By proposal of forms, which through their dimensions refer to old granaries, we tried to recreate the spirit of this extraordinary Island, which after years of oblivion, comes back to life and rises to become new modern city centre” – adds Marcin Kozikowski.
Wyspa Spichrzów (Granary Island), picturesquely situated at Motława River, fascinates tourists and investors. Attractiveness of the Island, incomparable with other districts of Gdańsk, results mainly due to central location and thus the most prestigious neighborhood of city monuments, including the famous “Żuraw” (Crane) and ul. Długa (Długa street) with Fontanna Neptuna (Fountain of Neptune). City centre also goes hand in hand with excellent communication, including Lech Walesa Airport, Gdańsk Main Railway Station and Gdansk Southern Ring Road.
